How Big Is the Game Category on Ebay? Infographic

Have you ever wondered how many video games sell on eBay during the course of a day? Or what the most expensive game ever sold was? Or maybe how many copies of Super Mario 3 have sold since eBay was founded? (The answers are: 19,012 games per day; Stadium Events for $41,000; and 12,091 Mario 3's since founding)

We asked eBay to answer some of our readers' questions about the video game category on eBay. All the answers are compiled below in a handy infographic.

Thanks for sharing this JJ! It is amazing to see that over half of the games sold are in some kind of new condition!

13 games sold per minute is the most impressive to me

Super Mario 3 is not on list of top sold games, but the numbers 12,091 say it should be.

@anonymous - The top selling games list is for September 2010 only. Super Mario 3 sold 12,091 copies on eBay since it was founded. So the two timeframes are very different. Sorry for any confusion.

The chart looks fantastic! There's certainly some interesting info.

I'm a bit surprised only 12,091 copies of Super Mario Bros. 3 have sold on eBay since eBay's founding in 1995. A few sources online stated that SMB 3 originally sold about 18 million copies. That seems to be an insanely small fraction of those that have ever hit eBay.

Assuming that those were all unique copies, where are the other 17,987,909 million copies of SMB 3?

VGPC says Super Mario 3 sells about 12 copies per day recently. If eBay had sold that same volume every day since it started in September 1995, which didn't happen, that'd still only be 66,500 copies sold. Even as big as eBay is, that's only a drop in the bucket compared Super Mario 3's popularity.

Incidentally, if there are 18 million copies, that means 1 in every 7 households in America owns a copy, on average. Pretty impressive.

@ mndrix

If there are 18 million copies, you have to keep in mind that not all of those are going to be in the US; Japanese, Canadians and Europeans also bought that game, so it would be less than 1 in 7 in the US.
