Xbox 360 and PS3 Games Are Worth Collecting Now

Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 already have some rare and valuable games (see Xbox 360's | see PS3's). With the launch of Xbox One and PS4, the time for the really rare/collectible games is upon us.

According to our research, rare games are five times more likely to launch in the last two years of a console's life than they are during any other time. As gamers move onto newer consoles the print runs become smaller for new releases. This increases the chance they will become rare.

There are many examples of this including Panzer Dragoon Saga for Saturn, Teen Titans for Xbox, and Flintstones Surprise at Dino Peak for NES. In general, about a third of the "most rare" games for any console were released in the last two years.

Xbox One and Playstation 4 launched less than a month ago (Nov. 22nd and Nov. 15th respectively). It is hard to imagine 360 and PS3 still being relevant in November 2015. So more than likely we are in the last two years of both Xbox 360 and PS3.

Not All Late Generation Games Will Be Rare

Not every game that comes out in the last two years will become rare, but your odds are much better than any other time.

To increase your odds even more focus on RPG or fighting games and limited editions. Data shows RPG's and Fighting games keep their value the best and have the highest chance of increasing in price. The same with limited edition games.

Which Games Will be Rare?

This is very hard to predict. Many of the games that will eventually come out are not announced yet. But I would focus on upcoming, RPG's or Fighting games or limited editions. Or best of all limited editions of an RPG.

Keep the games in brand new condition, do not open them. That helps increase rarity because most games are open in order to play. If you really want to play it buy a second copy.

Some announced games that are good examples:

Xbox 360
Dark Souls II
South Park: Stick of Truth
Fable Anniversary
Dragon Age
Lords of the Fallen
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z

Playstation 3
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemist of Dusk Sky
Dragon Age
Dark Souls II
Persona 5
Ragnarok Odyssey Ace

Can you think of any upcoming 360 and PS3 games that you think will be hard to find in the future? If so let us know in the comments below.

@Christopher - Metal Gear Legacy Collection has a limited edition version in Japan, but not one in USA or Europe. Compilation games have a good history of becoming valuable. GTA Trilogy for Xbox and Spyro Collection for PS1 are good examples of this.

The problem I see with the Xbox 360/PS3 list, is that there are so few actual "games" on the list, just bullshit "hyper-super-collectible-rare editions." The 360 doesn't have a single game on the main list that doesn't have "edition" in the title. PS3 only has 3 real games on the list. It would be nice to see these lists that ignore the "fake-collectability" that special editions cause. Also, if you look at the history of comics, you'll see the glut of special edition covers was part of what caused the speculator bubble burst.

In reality, I have a major problem with special editions, as they seem like a thinly-veiled cash-in on the video game collector boon currently happening. I'd love future articles to not include SEs in the same vein as games - because they aren't. Every SE listed has an alternate copy which could be found for pennies on the dollar eventually.

@anonymous - Thank you for the feedback on the lists.

I will try to include a separate list of "regular" games that are also rare/valuable in future articles or updates to these articles. That way people can see whichever type of list they want.

Right now there are not many rare/valuable "regular" games for PS3 or 360 because they reprints if they become too valuable. There might be more of them as 360 and PS3 generation ends, like there are for PS2 and PS1 but for now those games are few and far between.

You forgot Blazblue Chronophantasma which is a fighting game being released in March.

There is also NISA stuff in general that has a "limited" print run but whether it'll appreciate is debatable considering their most recent stuff has had a fairly healthy production thus the prices not increasing much except maybe during the preorder stage.
The Witch and the Hundred Knight is their most current preorder.

And lastly, there is also Square Enix's lot of store exclusive CEs/LEs for Final Fantasy X/X-II and Lightning Returns. Whether those will withhold a reasonable limit or be a massive overstockfest is left to be seen. Considering who it is though, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Well, i guess rumour of there not being a physical copy of Drakengard 3 outside of the SE online store might be something...

@telepathy - Great comment.

Those are great examples of games that have a great chance of becoming collectible.
Late generation - check
Good genre - check
Limited Edition - check

The Square Enix store exclusives are even more enticing because they should be produced in even smaller quantities if they are only available at their online store instead of larger online sellers and brick and mortar stores.

@telepathy

Imo, NIS ruined the good faith collectors had in their LEs by pumping them out for anything and everything. Blatant cash grab would be the word I use. It's why none of their LEs don't go anywhere.

SE on the other hand, these two FF ones might. Being store exclusive when most would think it wouldn't be is the kicker. Ni No Kuni was the prime example and could be a parallel. The question is if people will be left holding the bag when this comes out and were not aware it even existed.
