I was following the price for a while and they sold for over $100 consistently in the past few years at least, not sure where you got that they did't... Many other people who have posted on the price mentioned the same thing. And I am talking used but complete (game, case, manuals in good condition). I've only seen one brand new (i.e. sealed) and it was selling for about 300 bucks.

As I said- it's been a while since a copy of the ps2 version cost less than buying BOTH the dreamcast and a copy of the dreamcast version, which is considered the superior version..so I still don't see why anybody would pay that much for the ps2 version just to play it. It's clear that it happened, since the price IS dropping, but that just doesn't make sense to me. I have a feeling when the hype dies down long after the xbl/psn release, the price will go back up just because it's still a collectors item.

Used copies of the PS2 version are more expensive than the Dreamcast version but never sold for more than $100. Brand new copies did, but those are definitely selling to collectors.

The market for MvC2 was made up of some collectors and some people looking to play the game. I think the collectors are still in the market buying the game (at reduced prices) but a large portion of the gamers have decided to buy the upcoming versions instead.

That is why the price for the game has decreased but not dropped all the way to the price of the XBL and PSN versions. Collectors are still willing to pay for a physical copy of the game.

I see it happening, but it doesn't make sense to me that people were seriously paying $100+ for the game JUST to play it... I mean... if it was selling for those prices because it's rare and a collectors Item, then a new release shouldn't drop the resale price. I guess people really were willing to pay that much just to play the game... seems kind of retarded when you could have just gotten a Dreamcast AND the game for cheaper than the ps2 version (and you'd also be getting the superior version).

I sold my copy of MvC 2 on DC last week simply for this reason (the inevitable price drop). Wanted to cash in at the top.... Let's put it this way, the prices for the discs will NOT go up, they could only stay the same, and much more likely drop. Rez is a great example. I remember when it used to fetch upwards of $80. The first hit was when Play-Asia re-released it. Prices dropped quite a bit. The second hit was when it got the HD overhaul. Nowadays you can easily get it for around $20. Hell, even GameStop lowered the price on it (and those bastards take forever to reduce prices on games even if the market has). Still they are nice to have in their original incarnations.

I will be playing this with the d-pad on my ps3 controller. It works perfect for this. I noticed about 6 months ago that the ESRB had a rating for MVC2 on their website for Xbox 360 and PS3. I had the original copy of MVC2 for PS2 and decided that I would be able to get it cheap through download and so I quickly sold my original for $70. So glad I did it then before all this price drop stuff. I am not a collector obviously I just enjoy playing in my opinion the greatest fighting game ever created. Its been over tens years since its original release and its still the best fighter out there. Anyone who has not had the pleasure of playing this game I highly recommend it.

I definitely saw this coming the minute the game was announced. Unlike a lot of older titles, this is still a very playable game... I would say more people sought out a high priced copy to play it rather than collect it.

I play console fighters with the d-pad, so I'll be skipping this one on the 360 and sticking with the Dreamcast. Someone really needs to mod a 360 control with the Wii classic controller's d-pad.

Anonymous - the prices are definitely variable to begin with and one day's price movements does not make a statistically significant trend. But all 3 of them dropping at the same time and at prices not seen in 2 years is a pretty big change.

I will definitely follow this over a longer time frame to see if my prediction was correct about the prices declining more in the future.

DLC definitely lowers the value of games that used to be collectibles. Look at Castlevania Symphony of the Night. It used to be worth around $50 and now it's only worth around $30. Why? Well, you can get it on Xbox360 or PS3 for $10 by a download.

So overall, I'm thinking the whole reason people bought these games before was to simply play them. I mean the game is supposed to be one of the best games ever and gamers want to experience them.
