Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 for NES

Nintendo Campus Challenge
There is an auction on ebay for Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991. There is only one of these in the world and it's a very sought after piece of Nintendo gaming history.

In 1991 Nintendo hosted a second Nintendo World Championship but toured 58 college campuses so they called it the Campus Challenge. Nintendo made a special cartridge just for this event that had Super Mario 3, PinBot, and Dr. Mario. After the competition was finished all of the cartridges were supposed to be destroyed, but in 2006 this cartridge appeared at the garage sale of an ex-Nintendo employee.

The auction started at $0.99 with no reserve but the price already up to $3,250. Where will it end up? We will be sure to update the VGPC price for Nintendo Campus Challenge 91 once the auction closes.

UPDATE:
The game sold for a record $20,100. A user on youtube posted a video showing the last two minutes of the auction as the price increased from $8,500 to $10,000 and then to $20,100 with 2 seconds left.

Meh, ok, doesn't work for now. RL prefixes the search UPCs with a 0 to convert to 13 digits, your search only works with 12. Now, to find a way around it ;o)

Ok it really does work now. As post #1 but tick the (newly added) "Convert to UPC" box. Barcode scanning VGPC searching iPhone app ftw!

Congratulations on the sale of the world's most valuable rare video game! For those who weren't watching, the auction shot up from $8,500 to $20,100 in the last minutes of the eBay auction and some NES collector is now very happy!

That's awesome, I had never heard of this, or even new they went around holding competitions at campuses. I really feel like I missed out on a time in which I would have greatly enjoyed; hopefully gaming competitions make a major comeback, online is great, live is far more exciting.

I hope Nintendo or other companies do some huge traveling game tournament like these World Championships and Campus Challenge's back in the 90's. It would be great to have something like this again.

The problem is not many games are based on points anymore like they were on the NES. Points were a very easy way to compare people without making everyone play head-to-head.

Both contests used scores to weed the contestants in semi-finals. Both contests did have head-to-head rounds where seven/four to two compete.
