screws on the back while most have only 3 screws.  This article will explain the history behind this, list all the 5 screw variations, and compare 5 screw prices vs 3 screw prices.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E5 Screw History\u003C\/h3\u003EThe 5 screw cartridges are sealed together using 5 screws.  One in each corner and one in the middle (see the red circles in the photo above).  The screws are standard, flathead screws.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBy 1988 Nintendo decided to completely switch all cartridges to 3 screw versions instead.  These have two screws in the bottom corners and one in the middle (see red circles above).  They also have two notches at the top where the bottom half of the cartridge is inserted into the top half (see blue squares above).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EAt the same time, the screws were changed into proprietary versions that need special hex screwdriver bits to remove.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EPeople speculate that Nintendo made this change to save money (two fewer screens spread out over millions and millions of cartridges adds up).  Others think Nintendo made the change for security reasons, basically trying to make the cartridges harder to open and inspect.  Tengen and other companies were making unlicensed games, so security screws might have been attempt to make unlicensed games a little harder.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003ENintendo has never spoken publicly about the thought process behind the change so it is just speculation in the community.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EThe differences between 5 screw and 3 screw games are purely cosmetic. Mike Tyson's Punch Out was released October 1987, very close to the complete discontinuation of 5 screw games.  Very few 5 screw copies were released.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E \u003Ch3\u003EWhy 5 Screws to Begin With?\u003C\/h3\u003ENintendo released the Nintendo NES in Japan in 1983 as the Famicom.  The NES came out in the USA in 1985.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EFamicom cartridges are shorter than NES cartridges and if you ever open up an NES cartridge you will notice lots of empty space.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EThis empty space is in there because some of the first Nintendo NES games (Gyromite and Excitebike for example) reused Famicom PCB (printed circuit boards) in order to save money on circuit boards they had already paid for and didn't use in Japan. In order to open most of the games that you are going to find, you’re going to need some different screwdrivers: 3.8mm security bit, 4.5mm security bit, tri-wing head, small Philips head, and a small flat head screwdriver. These will allow you to open almost any old video game cartridge, console, or controller that you’ll run into. Opening games will allow you to not only verify legitimacy, but it will also allow you to clean up your games.  You can change dead batteries, completely clean game boards, remove loose pieces bouncing around inside of the cartridge, and swap out backs of games to make games look better.  Doing any of the above practices can only make your game collection more reliable, better looking, and more enjoyable. \u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Ch2\u003EWhat to Look for on The Circuit Board\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cb\u003ELook for any soldered wires on the PCB\u003C\/b\u003E. Official boards do not use wires to bridge different parts of the chips on them.  This is an immediate indication of a hack job and a pirated game.  The game might look official from the outside, but as soon as you disassemble it you will immediately notice that it’s a fake. \u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cb\u003ELook for stamps on the PCBs\u003C\/b\u003E.  Brand names like ‘Nintendo’ or ‘Sega’ printed directly onto the board will always help with confirming authenticity. This is not 100% though, as some bootlegs now have the company stamp on the boards. \u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EIf you buy a rare or expensive game online be cautious.  There are scams selling fake games that many collectors have fallen for.  If someone sends you pictures of the board before you meet up with them always double check it in person.  Take the cart apart and look at it for yourself before handing over any money.  There is nothing stopping the seller from sending you pictures of a legit board and then switching it out with a common game, a pirated PCB, a blank PCB, or even a broken PCB for the actual transaction.  There are good deals to be had online, but keep in mind that sometimes it might be too good to be true. \u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E \u003Ch2\u003EReproduction Labels on Cartridges\u003C\/h2\u003ESome games will have reproduction labels.  A collector might have replaced a damaged label with a new one.  This is not fraudulent.  Usually it is done to improve the appearance of a game.  Reproduction labels can be a sign of a bootlegged game too.  Be more cautious of games with bootlegged labels. \u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EMost reputable reproduction label manufacturers will have ‘REPRODUCTION’ written somewhere on the label.  I know that sounds like an IT guy asking you if your computer is plugged in when it won’t turn on, but most people bootlegging games don’t even notice any details on the label. This prototype is notable for the many differences the early version had compared to the final commercially released product. It includes a metal lunchbox, certificate of authenticity, marketing materials, and a gold Duck Tales cartridge.  \u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EUnlike the Mega Man 9 press kit, which included a non-working Mega Man 9 NES game, this Duck Tales actually works.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003ECapcom made 150 of these cartridges so it is definitely a rare game.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003ENone of these have shown up on eBay yet, but you can be sure one will soon.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EIt should be worth a lot more than the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/videogames.pricecharting.com\/game\/nes\/duck-tales\"\u003Eoriginal Duck Tales\u003C\/a\u003E, which sells for $14.
