The original Xbox stopped production in 2005 and since then some of the hundreds of Xbox games have become rare and sell for quite a bit to collectors. Even some of the not so rare games can still fetch high prices if they are popular enough and backward compatible (every game on the list but 1 can play on the 360). Below is the list of rarest and most expensive Xbox games and what makes them so valuable.
Rare Xbox Games
Steel Battalion with Controller
New Price: $175 | Used Price: $115 | See Current PricesSteel Battalion is a Mech game that was sold with a large specialty controller. The controller tried to replicate being inside a Mech and had nearly 40 buttons. Because the controller was so large the game retailed for $200 and only limited quantities were produced. The initial production was close to 2,000 units but the game was re-released, adding a few more copies to the market.
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis
New Price: $240 | Used Price: $66 | See Current PriceJurassic Park Operation Genesis you have to recreate the Jurassic Park theme park by creating dinosaurs, building rides, and attracting guests. Just like the movie, the dinosaurs can attack the guests if you don't take appropriate percautions. The game also features action missions that are separate from the theme park simulator.
The game is very uncommon but the exact reason for its limited availability is unknown. Jurassic Park received mediocre reviews but its rarity makes it expensive.
Grand Theft Auto Trilogy
New Price: $102 | Used Price: $40 | See Current PriceGrand Theft Auto Trilogy includes GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas in one package. In the GTA series of games you play as a character in an gang-land environment and must complete missions like stealing cars and killer rivals. The game is completely open so you can spend hours doing anything you want and not even complete a mission.
The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy wasn't released until November 2005, the same month the Xbox 360 launched. Most retailers quickly dropped support for Xbox titles after the 360 launched so the game was never fully supported at retail stores.
Sniper Elite
New Price: $100 | Used Price: $15 | See Current PriceSniper Elite was released on the PS2 at the same time and neither version sold very well, but the Xbox version is the rarer of the two. The game is entirely based upon stealth and using long range weapons. The sniping is more realistic than most FPS games because it takes into account wind, your breathing, and even gravity's effect on the bullet.
The game is not very expensive in loose condition, but very expensive and rare when brand new.
Digimon Rumble Arena 2
New Price: $70 | Used Price: $43 | See Current PriceDigimon Rumble Arena 2 is a fighting game. It is very similar to the Super Smash Bros series of games, but includes Digimon characters instead of Nintendo characters. Like the main line Digimon games, your Digimon can digivolve into more advanced characters.
Digimon Rumble Arena 2 is the last of the Digimon fighting games and is one of the most expensive games on GameCube and Playstation 2 as well.
Teen Titans
New Price: $NA | Used Price: $40 | See Current PriceTeen Titans is an action game based off of the Teen Titans TV series. You play as teen versions of comic book characters from the DC Comics universe - Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy.
Teen Titans was released on Xbox in November 2006. This was a full year after the Xbox 360 launched and hardly any retailers were actively promoting Xbox titles. As as result, the game was produced in limited quantities.
Halo Triple Pack
New Price: $65 | Used Price: $33 | See Current PriceLike the GTA Trilogy, Halo Triple Pack is a bundle of games sold as one package. It also came out too late in the Xbox's life to get full retail support. The Halo bundle includes Halo 1, Halo 2, and the Halo 2 Map expansion.
All three Halo's are backward compatible with the Xbox 360 which helps keep up demand. It was also released a month before Xbox 360 launched.
The Guy Game
New Price: $ | Used Price: $30 | See Current PriceThe Guy Game has you play has you answer trivia questions and as a reward see woman in bikinis. As you answer more and more questions correct, you eventually see topless live action video.
The nudity in the game led to its rarity. Four months after it was released a woman in the game sued the studio saying she was 17 at the time and the game was illegal. A judge filed a restraining order and the game could no longer be sold.
Star Wars Jedi Knight Academy
New Price: $85 | Used Price: $12 | See Current PriceJedi Knight Academy sold quite well and there are quite a few copies available, but the game is very popular with Star Wars fans and received very good review scores. You play as a student at the Jedi Academy and complete missions assigned to you by Luke Skywalker and other Jedi. The game also has a network multi-player mode so you can compete with other Jedi in training.
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Gold Game of the Year
New Price: $96 | Used Price: $22 | See Current PriceElder Scrolls III: Morrowind is a role-playing game. On the PC Elder Scrolls III received two expansion paks, Tribunal and Bloodmoon. The Game of the Year release for Xbox included the main game and other two expansions.
The Elder Scroll games for Xbox 360 continue to sell very well and there is lots of demand for Elder Scrolls III. This is the only way to play these two expansions on the Xbox, which helps increase demand even further.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy
New Price: $96 | Used Price: $22 | See Current PriceGauntlet Dark Legends is a action, dungeon crawler published by Midway. You play through different stages and try to unlock treasure and kill the enemies in order to get to the end. There are some RPG elements and it allows up to four player coop.
Dark Legacy is a great party game with the four player coop. The exact reason it is so rare is not known but fewer than four new listings will sell in a year, which makes it quite rare.
Test Drive: Eve of Destructions
New Price: $76 | Used Price: $25 | See Current PriceTest Drive: Eve of Destruction is a demlotion racing game published by Atari. You compete in demolition derbies and other races and try to advance in the circuit. There are several multi-player modes as well including deathmatches and capture the flag.
Eve of Destruction was only released in the PS2 and Xbox and it fairly expensive on the Playstation 2, but not quite as much as the Xbox version.
Star Wars Battlefront II
New Price: $75 | Used Price: $23 | See Current PriceStar Wars Battlefront II is an action game published by LucasArts. You play various missions that loosely follow the events in the Star Wars universe. You can use different weapons, troop types, and vehicles like AT-AT's depending on the mission and objective. The game is very popular in multi-player.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 sold very well on the PS2, but not quite as well on the Xbox because the 360 launched the same month. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 it was one of the most played games on the Xbox. This is the last Battlefront game made for a console. High demand for the game continues to keep prices high.
OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
New Price: $67 | Used Price: $23 | See Current PriceOutRun 2006 is a racing game published by Sega. It is a re-imagining of the first OutRun game with modern graphics. You compete in a series of races in the main race mode, but can also complete mission modes that require you to pull off certain maneuvers.
The game was released in March 2006, four months after the Xbox 360 launched. It was not backward compatible with the 360 until 2007. Sega didn't print many copies of the game because consumers had moved onto other consoles.
IHRA Drag Racing Sportsman Edition
New Price: $50 | Used Price: $25 | See Current PriceIHRA Drag Racing Sportsman Edition is a racing game. You race as different models of cars in many different locations. Like most racing games now, you can customize your car with different parts to change the look and performance.
IHRA Drag Racing was the third drag racing game for the Xbox, but it was released in June 2006 and people were no longer buying original Xbox games with the 360 on the market.

Used prices are the average sales prices on eBay, Amazon, and Half.com between December 1st, 2008 and February 26th, 2009. New prices are the average sales price for a sealed copy on the same websites during the same time period.
The list is ranked by average sales price during the last three months. All the games are not rare (hard to find with small quantities available), but relative to demand all of these are in short supply.

Woot, just picked up Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for Xbox (pal)! Not cheap but, less than the price up there. Dunno whether to sell it or not now... would the price generally increase?
I don't know PAL games as well as NSTC ones, but I am fairly confident that Marvel vs Capcom won't be dropping in price. I don't think Capcom is going to re-release the game for the Xbox. Especially the PAL one because the Xbox just wasn't that popular.

This blog makes me laugh. The only games which are truly rare are limited pressings and promo editions. There are 2 titles here which have been flooding the used markets with factory sealed copies for months in both Europe and the States. Where were these "ultra rares " lurking all this time? Who decides these are rare? Ultimately distributors, people like the person behind this blog and YOU- Theres no such thing since 5th gen consoles hit the stores. Its an overused term for what are essentially just mass produced products.
Why are sought after games always rubbish? Oh that’s right because distribution was cut short before more money was wasted. If you pay these kind of prices for old games, You have more money than sense.
Anonymous - many of these games are not considered the "best" games on Xbox by any means. But there are reasons that these games are "rare" as I explain in the article.
"Rare" is also a relative term. There might be 100,000's of copies of some of these games but the market price is fairly high meaning there aren't as many games as maybe the market was willing to pay for. A few of these sell for more when they are new then the MSRP price.
My Point was its obvious distribution of crummy titles is deliberately manipulated to creat a false market. Its an older story than the wii. People should boycott these prices.
Several Christmases ago, I discovered a game called Bible Trivia for Xbox and bought one to save for posterity because I knew it would be an instant rarity -- considering the old Wisdom Tree games for NES were also. I took it home and looked it up to discover it was actually going for a much higher price online like Half.ebay.com and decided to buy up every copy in town I could find. I went to Kansas City for a Christmas vacation and also bought every copy I could find there -- I ended up selling all of them $10-15 more than what I paid for them, within a week or two and kept one for myself.
Correction: "The Bible Game" was the title.

How about Otogi 1 and 2, Shenmue 2, Armed and Dangerous, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Manhunt, Tom Clancy triplepack(splntrcell,ghostrcn,Rnbw6)and Silent Hill 2. All very good and rare!

Any estimations on what one complete copy of one of every original xbox game (NSTC) would be worth? And the games all work good and have perfect cases (no sticker residue or cracks)
a complete collection of xbox games with all accessories would go for thousands but you would need to sell it in the right auction & put a reserve price on it
@anonymous - A complete Xbox game collection is worth $4,000 if you add up the value of each game. It would probably sell for about $3,200 though because game lots usually sell at a discount compared to the individual items.
@anonymous - On average auctions with reserve prices sell for less than auctions without reserves. If you had a complete collection you should list it without a reserve price so you can get more money out of it.

@anonymous - Marvel v Capcom is not as rare or expensive as it once was. But at one point it was the rarest Xbox game, definitely not the "rarest game ever" at any point in time.

Only the controller and game are worth at least 100-125 euro's. This list is way off with the pricing on that item. Other games on the list can be rare but are only worth a couple of bucks in europe. 20-30 max for most of them.
I like your site a lot, but the Xbox section features some pretty weak research, and of course is outdated now. I understand not mentioning Metal Wolf Chaos because you mainly expand on domestic games... but it's certainly most rare (and you mention imports in other sections). There are several games left off your list that suprise me also. Are you planning to redo some of the more last couple gen stuff?
@anonymous - Thanks for the feedback. We do edit the articles every couple of years and it is about time to edit the Xbox, PS2, and Wii articles. I will look into adding some rare imports to the list as well.
What about Wallace and Gromit in Project Zoo or Red Dead Revolver?, they are pretty hard to find.

These games are horrible out of date, old. It used to be that they were good, but now is not interesting. The newer games are more beautiful, more interesting.

Everytime somebody googles "rare xbox games" this pops up in the top results. Why is it a problem? Teen Titans has been well over 100 bucks on ebay for close to a year and a half now and Sniper Elite isn't that hard to find.
Surprised Stubbs the Zombie and Call Of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth didn't make this list
I think the prices on some games are a bit exaggerated. $240 for Jurassic Park Operation Genesis is a bit too much. However, the game catalog is good, some of my favourite games are here!
Actually even in 2022 prices are still rising. Games like these are becoming more and more rare so people tend to pay higher prices.
