15 Rare Super Nintendo Games | Most Expensive SNES Games

The Super Nintendo has a ton of rare video games and quite a few super expensive games too. Below is a list of the rarest and most expensive Super Nintendo games and what makes them so valuable.

The list is ranked by highest recorded loose cartridge price.

Nintendo Powerfest 1994

Powerfest 1994 was a nation wide video game competition Nintendo hosted to market their Super Nintendo console. For this competition Nintendo made a unique cartridge with three games on it. The game had Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, and Ken Griffey Jr Baseball on it. Players would compete to get a high score by beating the first level of Mario World, finishing the first track of Mario Kart, and hitting as many home runs as possible in Ken Griffey.

Only two of these cartridges are known to exist today. All the rest were destroyed by Nintendo after the competition was finished. The first cartridge was originally found at a epic garage sale and then sold for $10,000 to a collector. The second cartridge was sold on eBay for $23,000.

Nintendo Campus Challenge 1992

Nintendo sponsored a video game competiton on 60 college campus in the US. Competitors had a fixed time to get 50 coins in Super Mario World, complete two laps in F-Zero, and lang targets in Pilot Wings. An overall score was calculated and a nationwide winner was determined. In order to run this competition Nintendo made custom SNES cartridges.

All of these cartridges were supposed to be recycled by Nintendo after the event, but only two NTSC versions of the game exist. One was found at an the same garage sale mentioned above and the other was kept by an employee helping with the original event.

Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge

In 1995 Blockbuster held the "Blockbuster Video Game Championship II" at all their stores across the world. As part of this competition Nintendo made a special Donkey Kong Country cartridge (a Sega Genesis game was made for this competition too). DKC Competition has eight levels and only allows five minutes of play before giving a score. High Scorers at each store were given prizes and eventually a winner was crowned in San Francisco.

After the competition was completed the cartridge was sold through the Nintendo Power catalog. The description in the catalog said 2,500 copies were made.

Exertainment Mountain Bikerally & Speed Racer

Nintendo and LifeFitness teamed up to develop a stationary bike that was compatible with Super Nintendo games. You would pedal the bike and move your character faster on the game and could steer using specially designed controllers that attached to the handle bars. Only two games were developed for the bike though: Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally and Exertainment Bike Rally & Speed Racer combo.

The combination cartridge was officially licensed by Nintendo but never made it to stores. Most of the copies available today were found at a Nintendo warehouse. The exact number of copies available isn't known, but there are probably fewer than 1,000 to 2,000.

MACS Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator

M.A.C.S. (Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator) was developed for the US Army to help train soldiers on M16 accuracy. The game included a gun that was identical in weight and size to a real M16, but uses the same technology as the Super Scope so it can be used on a TV.

The exact number of copies originally made is unknown. The game comes up for sale very infrequently but when it does, it fetches top dollar. The last sale was for $1,200.

Starfox Super Weekend Competition Cartridge

Another cartridge made for a Nintendo competition. The Starfox Competition cartridge was hosted at toy stores across the country when StarFox was released on the Super Nintendo in 1993. The game allows only four minutes of play time and includes three levels. Two of the levels are shortened versions of Corneria and Asteroids, but the third is a level designed just for the cartridge.

After the competition was complete Nintendo sold the cartridges to Nintendo Power subscribers through a catalog. The game sold for $45 when original released and now sells for $400. There are roughly 2,000 copies assuming Nintendo only made enough for the stores that held the competition. That makes it the rarest officially released game on this list.

Aero Fighters

Aero Fighters is a vertical side-scrolling shoot-em up. You control a fighter jet from one of four countries (USA, Japan, Sweden, and UK) and shoot your way through seven stages. After beating these stages the difficulty level gets much harder as you play through again.

Aero Fighters was one of only two games released by publisher Mc O'River. They released Hyper V-Ball for Super Nintendo in June 1994 and Aero Fighters in November 1994. V-Ball is easy to find but Aero Fighters is extrememly rare.

Hagane: The Final Conflict

Hagane is a side-scrolling action game for the Super Nintendo and very similar to the Ninja Gaiden series. The game is extremely difficult and does not have a save feature, which only adds to the difficulty. You need to beat the game in one sitting.

Hagane was only available at Blockbuster stores so not as many copies were produced as wide-release games.

Pocky & Rocky 2

Pocky & Rocky 2 is an action game with many elements from shoot-em up games. Enemies and bosses appear on the screen and you shoot in one of 8 directions to kill them. Unlike most shoot-em up games, you don't control an airplane. You instead control a human, Pocky, or one of several player 2 options.

Pocky & Rocky 2 was released in November 1994 and is a sequel to Pocky & Rocky for SNES. Like many sequels for the Super NES, it is harder to find than the original and fetches a premium price too.

Final Fight Guy

Final Fight was a launch title for Super Nintendo in 1991. Final Fight Guy was released three years in 1994 with a few minor changes. The character Cody was replaced with Guy and four difficulty settings were added.

Final Fight Guy was originally available as a rental only through Blockbuster Video. It later received a limited release for sale, but the limited distribution makes the game hard to find today.

Metal Warriors

Metal Warriors is a side scrolling platformer. You play as a human who controls a mech and fights other mechs. You can exit your mech at times to get into smaller areas and switch to different mechs.

Metal Warriors was released exclusive in North America in 1995. It never received a Japanese or PAL release.

Mega Man X3

Mega Man X3 is an action platformer similar to the standard Mega Man series. You play 8 different levels in the order you desire and get special weapons from beating each stage. Like Mega Man X2, X3 included a Cx4 chip which allowed it to display some 3D vector graphics, an advanced feature for the time.

Capcom produced limited quantities of Mega Man X3 after supply and demand in balances in fall of 1995. X3 launched with a premium price of $74 (compared to $50 for most SNES games). Both of these factors make Mega Man X3 a rare title today.

Wild Guns

Wild Guns is a sci-fi/western themed shooting gallery game. You move a cursor around the screen to shoot at enemies. It is similar to light gun games but you use the controller to aim and must dodge the enemy attacks.

Wild Guns was released in fall of 1995 after a delay from fall of 1994. The delay came at the last minute because reviews for the game came out in 1994. It was considered one of the best shooters on the SNES and remains a cult classic for a very niche genre.

Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus

Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus is an educational platformer. The game tries to teach kids abou asthma while playing. The world is covered in dust causing asthma in the dinosaurs. The characters can get short of breath from cigarette smoke and furry animals. At times you are taught how to use an inhaler and quizzed on facts about people with asthma.

The odd premise of the game probably limited sales when it released late in 1995. The game received poor reviews and is not very good, but that doesn't lower its price any for collectors.

Earthbound

Earthbound is a cult classic RPG for the Super Nintendo. It has a very devoted following of fans who go to great lengths to buy the game and its sequels (both of which were unreleased in the USA but fully translated by fans). The game is full of funny characters, interesting dialog, and uses unconventional weapons like yo-yos and frying pans.

The game has never been re-released on virtual console or available anywhere but the Super Nintendo. The unique nature of the game makes it very popular with collectors while the devoted following keeps supply low. Both of which keep this game selling for more than $120.

Super Turrican 2

Super Turrican 2 is an action game, very similar to Contra. You get gun upgrades to improve your weapons and defeat bosses at the end of each level. The game was released during Christmas 1995, near the end of the Super Nintendo's life.

Because it was released so late in the console's life it didn't sell that well, but is still well regarded by collectors. The game has been re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 but resale prices have only increased since then.

10 Rare Wii U Games | The Most Valuable Wii U Games

The Wii U launched in November 2012 and was killed off in 2017 when the Nintendo Switch came out. During this 4+ year lifespan, more than 190 games were released.

Some of these games sold millions of copies, while others sold poorly or were produced in very limited quantities. Many of these games have become valuable now.

10 Rare & Valuable Wii U Games

Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition

When Hyrule Warriors launched for Wii U in 2014 Nintendo released a limited edition. The Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition was only sold in NYC at the Nintendo World Store.

The exact number of copies made isn't known but it probably numbers in the hundreds. Nintendo World Store had a line 3 blocks long and not everyone in the line received a copy.

Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition

Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition is the standard game with a blue shell on a pedestal for displaying. Like Hyrule Warriors, this was a Nintendo World Store exclusive.

Nintendo has never released sales figures for this limited edition, but prices indicate it is probably more common than Hyrule Warriors. Caution to would be buyers. The European version looks very similar, but is fairly common. The NTSC version is mostly red, while the European version is blue.

Hello Kitty Kruisers

Hello Kitty Kruisers is an example of a game that is valuable, inspite of its poor quality. It's a Mario Kart type clone. The publisher probably thought, replace Mario characters with Hello Kitty characters and cash in.

They didn't print many copies of the game though because it is very hard to find. The digital version can be purchased for $10 in the eShop, but collectors aren't paying for the game they are paying for the rarity.

Super Smash Bros Wii U Controller Bundle

Nintendo released a limited edition Smash Bros Gamecube controller at the same time they released Smash Bros for Wii U. Nintendo also released a bundled version that includes the game, the controller, and the 4 port Gamecube controller adaptor.

The package originally sold for $99, but it has quickly increased in price to more than $180. The bundle is worth much less when opened because all of the parts can be bought separately and are not as rare by themselves.

Zelda Wind Waker HD Limited Edition

Another Nintendo Limited Edition makes the list, but this time it was released widely instead of a World Store exclusive. The limited edition includes a 5" Ganandorf figure as the bonus item.

This only cost $69.99 at retail, $10 more than the standard edition, but this version has nearly doubled in price while the standard edition has declined. The Nintendo Selects version had a major impact on the standard version's price, but didn't put a dent in the limited edition price.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

The Rio version of the Mario & Sonic series of Olympic games. It is one of the last games released on the Wii U and many retailers had cut back on their Wii U purchases. The game is tied to a specific event too, which might have discouraged retailers from buying it.

The game is fairly hard to find and probably won't be re-released because it's on a dying console and it's licensed (Sonic characters and Olympics). Licensed games are harder to reprint because the licensing agreement can have restrictions on how long the license lasts.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Special Edition

Tokyo Mirage Sessions was released the same day as Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 (June 24, 2016 was a bad day to release games). The Special Edition includes an artbook, soundtrack CD, sticker sheet, and some DLC, along with the game itself.

The game is published by Atlus, notorious for their small print runs, and was sold exclusively at Gamestop and Amazon which limited its distribution. Mirage Sessions SE originally sold for $80 so prices haven't increased much, but they have held very steady.

Wii Sports Club

Wii Sports Club is basically Wii Sports with online competition. Initially, the game could only be downloaded from the eShop and included a free 24 hour trial. Then you could buy passes to play particular sports for a day or unlimited amount of time. It was Nintendo's attempt at a freemium game.

The experiment probably didn't work very well and a retail version was released 8 months later for $40.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 was released for the Wii U and soon became a sought after collector's item as people realized it was a fun game but very hard to find. In late 2015, after Nintendo announced Bayonetta DLC for Smash Bros, prices spiked as high as $90 for a sealed copy.

Nintendo re-released the game but the reprint doesn't include the Bayonetta 1 disc that the original printing does and only sells for $20. Look for the "Bonus Bayonetta" on the cover to differentiate the two.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Special Edition

Xenoblade Chronicles X is a follow-up to the rare Xenoblade RPG on the Wii. That version was neglected by Nintendo for years and then released and reprinted. Nintendo America didn't repeat the same mistake with Xenoblade X and wanted to capitalize on the collector market with a Special Edition.

Nintendo might have over corrected after Xenoblade's gross under-production because the Xenoblade X Special Edition has decreased in price 20% from it's launch price of $90.

15 Rare Sports Video Games | The Most Expensive Sports Games Ever

Sports video games are notorious for dropping in value really quickly. That Madden game you bought last year is probably worth 10% of what you paid and after a few years might be worth $3 if your lucky.

There are some big exceptions to this general rule. Some rare sports games sell for thousands of dollars. Below is a list of the rarest and most expensive sports video games and what makes them so valuable.

Most Valuable Sports Video Games

Stadium Events for Nintendo NES

Stadium Events is a track and field game for the Nintendo NES. Stadium Events was the second game designed for the Family Fitness mat (Athletic World was the first). But in 1987 Nintendo bought the rights from Bandai and changed the name to World Class Track Meet.

Nintendo stopped shipping Stadium Events and recalled all copies that had shipped but not all the copies were destroyed and a few ended up in customer's hands. The European version was never recalled and is much cheaper.

Spiker! Super Pro Volleyball for Intellivision

Spiker Super Pro Volleyball is a volleball game for the Intellivision. You can play 2v2 or 6v6. The graphics were very advanced for the Intellivision era.

The Intellivision stopped production in 1984 and Spiker was released in 1989 and was the last game released for the system. The publisher, INTV, barely scraped the money together to publish the game at all and was unable to produce many copies.

NBA Elite 11 for Playstation 3

NBA Elite 11 is a NBA basketball game for Playstation 3. The game was to be published by EA Sports in 2011, but it was delayed and missed the start of the regular season. In late 2011 it was officially cancelled by EA.

Although it was never officially released, EA had shipped copies of the game to retailers and media for demo purposes. These copies show that the game is very glitchy and incomplete. Collector's aren't paying thousands of dollars to play a great basketball game, they are paying for the rarity.

Super Series Big League Baseball for Intellivision

Super Series Baseball is for Intellivision. It was way ahead of its time with play-by-play, multiple camera angles, and picture-in-picture for runner's on base. All of this for a game released in 1982.

The exact same game was also released in 1983 as 'World Series Major League Baseball' with an official MLB license. The original 'Super Series' version from 1982 is much more valuable and harder to find.

Mountain Madness: Super Pro Skiing for Intellvision

Mountain Madness: Super Pro Skiing was released for the Intellivision in 1988. It is an enhanced version of Skiing with 32 courses instead of just one. You could race any course as downhill or slalom and even design your own courses.

The game was released by INTV Corp, four years after Mattel shut-down the Intellivision division. By this point most Intellivision owners had stopped buying new games and almost all retail stores had stopped carrying them. Because of this the game was produced in very small quantities.

Super Copa for Super Nintendo

Super Copa is a soccer game for the Super Nintendo. The exact same game was originally released as Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer in 1993. It sold poorly as Tony Meola but not bad enough to be considered rare.

The game was rebranded as Super Copa for release outside the USA. Some collector's think the game was never officially released in the USA but it was rated by the ESRB, which only happens for games slated to be released here. Whether it was released officially or not, the copies available are very expensive and very rare.

NCAA Basketball 10 for Xbox 360

NCAA Basketball 10 was released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game features Blake Griffin on the front cover and has broadcasting voices from ESPN and CBS. In February 2010, EA announced they would not release another NCAA Basketball game in the foreseeable future.

Every February and March prices spike for NCAA Basketball 10 as interest peaks with March Madness. It is the most updated NCAA Basketball game available. The Xbox 360 version is more expensive than the PS3 version.

James Buster Douglas Boxing for Sega Master System

James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing was released for Sega Master System in 1988. After Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson, Sega quickly signed him to a deal and released a boxing game with his name on it. The Genesis version is worth hardly anything.

Buster Douglas boxing is the second most expensive game for the Master System and very hard to find. The game was released in 1990, which was a year after the Genesis was released. By this point Sega was only providing token support and didn't produce many copies of the game.

NCAA College Basketball 2K3

NCAA Basketball 2K3 was released for Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube but only the Gamecube version is rare. It is the only NCAA basketball game for the Gamecube.

In 2003, Sega decided to stop making sports games in their 2K line of games because of lackluster sales. The Gamecube games had sold the worst. Part way through production, Sega decided to stop the Gamecube version but continue making PS2 and Xbox. The few Gamecube games made were sold to stores but on a very limited basis.

International Superstar Soccer Deluxe for Super Nintendo

International Superstar Soccer Deluxe was published on the Super Nintendo. The game was released in 1995 and is a sequel to a very similar game released a year earlier. The Deluxe version added features like 2 player co-op, extra commentary, and small graphical improvements.

Both ISS and ISS Deluxe were trying to capitalize on the success of the World Cup in the USA in 1994, but neither sold very well in the USA. The Deluxe version is rarer than the original and incredibly hard to find complete with the box and instructions.

• Virtual Bowling for Virtual Boy | Used Price: $1,395 - Last game for Virtual Boy. Only released in Japan.
• Exertainment Mountain Bikerally/Speed Racer for SNES | Used Price: $500 - Bike racing might qualify as a sports game, but we classify it as racing.
• Punch-Out Special Edition for NES | Used Price: $300 - Gold cartridge released in a competition. Only released in Japan.
• NCAA Basketball 10 for PS3 | Used Price: $54 - Same as the Xbox 360 game listed above, but not as valuable.
• International Superstar Soccer for SNES | Used Price: $60 - Similar to ISS Deluxe but not quite as rare.

Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition

When the original Dead Space launched is 2008, EA made 1,000 Ultra Limited Edition copies they sold for $149 each. This special edition includes the game itself, special packaging, "Downfall" animated DVD, lithograph, artbook, graphic novel, and Ishimura patch.

The price is much higher than other limited editions because EA made such a small quantity and has never re-printed them. At the current new price of $750, the game has increased in value 400% since it came out 4 years ago.

Fallout 3 Survival Edition

Fallout 3's received two special editions, the Collector's Edition (see below) and the Survival Edition. The Survial Edition includes everything in the Collector's Edition in addition to a full sized Pip-boy 3000 replica, which is basically a really cool looking digital clock.

The Survival Edition was sold exclusively at Amazon for a retail price of $129.99. Even in used condition this special edition sells for more than double the MSRP.

Mass Effect Collector's Edition

The original Mass Effect's collector's edition includes the game, tin box, tin box slip cover, an art book, and fiction book.

This Collector's Edition was not an exclusive or produced in extremely limited quantities, but it still sells for much more than the original retail price if it is still sealed.

Assassin's Creed II The Master Assassin's Edition

Assassin's Creed II The Master Assassin's Edition includes the game, limited edition box, Ezio figurine, an artbook, and DVD with music and behind the scenes videos, and two bonus areas in the game.

The two bonus areas were later made available via Xbox Live and Game of the Year Editions.

Tales of Vesperia Special Edition

Tales of Vesperia Special Edition includes the game in a steelBook case and a 10th anniversary soundtrack CD. The soundtrack includes tracks from many of the Tales games released in the past decade.

This special edition has much less included than other limited editions on this list, but still fetches a big premium to the original MSRP. The game originally sold for $69.99 and even in used condition it sells for more than that now.

Halo 3 Legendary Edition

The Halo 3 Legandary Edition includes a special edition outer box and inner box, three disc set with the game, Collector's Edition disc, and cutscene disc. The limited edition also includes a scaled-down model of the Mark VI helmet.

This is the first game on the list that has actually decreased in price slightly from its initial retail price of $129.99. It is also the one that sold the most units, which explains why prices are not as high. If the helmet had been life sized this would be the ultimate Halloween costume item.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition

Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition includes the Batman game, 48 page journal, behind the scenes DVD, exclusive DLC code, and a replica Batarang measuring 14" across.

The Collector's Edition retailed for $99.99 originally and is slightly more expensive than this if still sealed in the original packaging.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition has perhaps the coolest special edition pack-in ever - fully functioning night vision goggles. Along with the googles and the game itself, the special edition includes an artbook and special game tin.

The game originally sold for $149.99, which makes it the most expensive game on this list in terms of MSRP. The game sells for about $30 less than its original price so it has decreased in value over time.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance Gold

Marvel Ultimate Alliance in late 2006 and by mid 2007 several different downloadable packs were available with different characters and achievments. In May 2007 the Gold version was released with all the downloadable content already included.

A Platinum Hits version was released four months later and the Gold version was discontinued. Because the Gold Edition was available for such a short period of time it is available in much smaller quantities than the other two versions.

Record of Agarest War Limited Edition

Aksys's "Really Naughty Limited Edition" for Record of Agarest War is not your usual limited edition. It comes with the usual soundtrack, and special box to go along with the game but it also includes Vira-Lor breast shaped mouse pad and Yearning Ellis pillowcase. All the artwork included in the limited edition is much more provacative than the standard cover art.

The limited edition sold for the same price as the regular edition but was available via preorder only. Based upon recent prices the naughty edition has nearly doubled in price.

Halo: Reach Legendary Edition

After the success of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition, Microsoft decided to do a Legendary Edition for Halo: Reach as well. This version includes an armored container, the game, in-game exclusive content, journal, security badge, embroidered patch, and Noble team statue.

Microsoft overproduced this version though if prices are any indication. The game originally sold for $149.99 but now only sells for a little more than $80 when brand new. That price is still enough to qualify for this list, but it is the largest price decrease from MSRP with an almost 50% drop.

Aliens vs. Predator Hunter Edition

Aliens vs Predator Hunter Edition includes the game, special box, artbook, Weyland-Yutani badge, postcard, and best of all a Facehugger alien replica.

The game quickly sold out a GameStop at the $99.99 price, but has still decreased in price a bit inspite of the initial sales success.

Final Fantasy XI: Ultimate Collection

The Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection includes the original FF11 game plus all expansions and three add-on scenarios.

The PC version is available as a download on Square Enix's store for $20, which helps hold the price down on the PC version ($5). The Xbox 360 does not have a full download version and now sells for a premium price.

Assassin's Creed Limited Edition

The original Assassin's Creed Limited Edition contains the game, a bonus disc, a collectible 3 inch Altair figurine, a comic, and a mini-strategy guide.

This limited edition sells for almost the exact same price as it did originally at retail stores.

Fallout 3 Collector's Edition

Fallout 3 Collector's Edition includes the game, art and commentary book, behind the scenes DVD, Vault-Tec lunch box, and a Vault Boy Bobblehead.

This version was sold at all major retailers and is much more common than the Survival Edition near the top of this list. The only difference between the two is the color of the outer box and the inclusion of Pip-boy 3000 replica in the Survival Edition.
