Syphon Filter 3 911 Flag Version: A Flag Makes It 120x More Valuable

Syphon Filter 3 is worth about $3-4 disc only and $12-15 brand new.

If Syphon Filter 3 has an American Flag on it, it recently sold for $2,400 brand new. 120x more for the cover art.

Why the cover art variant so valuable and why does it exist in the first place?

Answer: 9/11

Sony was set to release Syphon Filter 3 on Sept 21, 2001. The original cover art included the US Flag and images of US Government buildings exploding. Sony had started shipping the game to retailers for the upcoming release.

After 9/11, Sony decided to delay the game and recall all shipments. Sony felt the flag cover art was inappropriate after terrorists actually targeted government buildings. Sony would change the cover art and release the game in November 2011 instead.

Most of the original shipments were returned to Sony and never made it out in the public, but some of them got out in the wild.

The 9/11 Flag variant is now extremely rare and there is an interesting story behind it. That means supply is low and demand is high (people like games with fun stories behind them), so the price for the 9/11 American Flag Syphon Filter 3 is worth 120 times as much as the regular version.

If you ever see Syphon Filter 3 in the wild, be sure to see which version it is....the flag could be worth thousands of dollars.

Thanks to an interview from Syphon Filter 3 lead designer for information on the backstory.

Tracking Prices for Playstation 1 Greatest Hits Games

We've started tracking the prices for PS1 Greatest Hits versions separate from the standard, black label releases.

Search "greatest hits" and then filter by "Playstation" games to see a list of all the green label releases we are tracking. The list doesn't include every greatest hits release because we excluded a bunch of sports ones where neither the black label or green label is worth much.

This change does make an impact on the more valuable/rare games like Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania Symphony of Night. A Complete in Box black label might be $30 but the greatest hits version sells for $20.

We plan on adding other variations in the future like Playstation Long Box variants, Neo Geo MVS vs AES, etc. If you have ideas for other variants to track please let us know in the comments below.

The Rarest/Only Easter Game

Ah, Easter, a time of rebirth, hope, and candy. I love the holiday. I love the spring air, the green grass, the rabbits in my yard, and my dog going insane at the sight of them. What better way to spend this day then to turtle up inside and shut out family, the outdoors, and life itself. Want to experience all the razzle-dazzle of the big day without the mess (and human interaction), then you should stay indoors and play Easter Bunny's Big Day on the PlayStation 1. Developed by Seven Computerized Generations (their only game) and published by Mastiff, LLC. (not their only game) on March 17th, 2003, EBBD takes us to the nadir of gaming experiences.

You don't even play as the Easter Bunny in this game.
You play as the Easter Bunny's robotic friend, Robo-Rabbit, on the primal quest to reclaim eggs for all the good boys and girls because according to legend, on Easter day, if you've been good since Christmas, a rabbit will give you eggs. This is how Easter works, right? The in-game way of helping the Easter Bunny acquire said eggs is to put together simple puzzles, catch falling eggs, play matching minigames, and put together more simple puzzles. This game is so mundane it is art. The beautiful MIDI quality music, the top-notch 3D renders ala 1995, the pastel colors; they all work together in discordant harmony to bring you a game experience that can only be compared to a cacophonous masterpiece. It is the beginning and the end.

What this game actually has going for it is that it is an extremely uncommon game and is rumored to be released in a quantity numbered only in the hundreds. The small San Francisco-based publisher ensured that only a few stores actually received copies for retail release, the most notable being Toys'R'Us. What really makes this game stand out among other PS1 titles is the unique purple spine color. This is the only game in the entire PS1 catalog that have a purple spine. Also it is important to note the late release date of 2003, this is incredibly late in the lifespan of the PS1. Late life games usually turn into collectibles later on since so much of the market is focused on the next gen. The game also sold so poorly that Mastiff doesn't even list it on their website nor does the game have a dedicated Wikipedia page [go ahead and make one, quote me, make my day].

Right now this game is dirt cheap, usually selling for around $5. I'd suggest that if you have an extra fiver lying around, you might as well buy a copy and torture yourself and your friends while embracing the true meaning of Easter.

Whatever that may be.

5 Rare & Crazy Video Game Controllers

Author: Quincy Pringle

Zelda Nubytech Controller

This licensed GameCube controller is a nonfunctional prototype. Created by Nubytech during the development of Twilight Princess in 2005. It was designed by a Nubytech employee by the name of Alfredo Tato.

This thing is crazy: not only does it have a shield in the center, but it also has a buckled leather vambrace. Only two of these were ever known to have been created, and only one is known to be in circulation. Back in 2012, one of them sold on eBay for $2,500. It’s most likely in the hands of a diehard collector, but if you see this floating around it is a must purchase simply for the rarity and value.

Sega Genesis Prototype Controller
This controller was a prototype created by Sega for the Genesis/Megadrive system. It featured a plastic center that the buttons and d-pad could be removed from, in order to facilitate a left or right handed player. The design looks very uncomfortable and I’m glad that they didn’t use it.

It popped up on eBay from a seller who reportedly received it from an ex-Sega employee. However, the auction has since been taken down which unfortunately takes away from the details. Regardless, this is an important piece of Sega history and is undoubtedly worth a lot of money.

Resident Evil 4 GameCube Chainsaw Controller
Another Nubytech GameCube controller. This device was created for the release of Resident Evil 4. While not as rare as some of the other controllers on this list, it bears mentioning simply due to its appearance and notoriety. It has to be seen to be believed.

Sporting bloodstains, a prop blade, and a matching stand, this rare and twisted piece of hardware is an amazing example of form over function. It pops up semi-frequently on eBay and typically sells for anywhere between $100-300.

Wu-Tang PS1 Controller
This controller shaped like the Wu-Tang Clan symbol(!) was made to commemorate the release of 1999’s Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style by Activision. While the game itself was not so great, the controller is pure class.

Look at it. Bask in its glory. Unfortunately, it handles like a drunken grandma and the controller itself is painful to use. In addition, the plastic used is pretty cheap quality and the controllers have been known to malfunction as a result. Despite the flaws, the controller usually run for anywhere from $60-$100 on eBay and tend to appear rather infrequently.

NES Arkanoid Vaus Controller
When Arkanoid was released on the NES back in 1986, it came packaged with this controller. Interestingly enough, neither the controller nor the game could be bough separately. Unlike the rest of the controllers on this list, it is extremely functional and works very well for its intended purpose. The knob lets the player control the paddle in the game at various speeds in order to improve the gameplay.

Its form is very unique from other NES accessories, featuring the aforementioned paddle and a button to allow for menus navigation and gameplay purposes. These controllers consistently sell in the $50-100 range and pop up on a fairly regular basis despite being rather rare.

Digimon World 2 Review

Author: Logan Petty

While perusing my favorite used game store a few weeks ago, I came across a great gem that holds fiscal value as well as sentimental value. It may not be as exciting as coming across a Nintendo World Championships cartridge, but it is still one worth writing about. The game in question is Digimon World 2. Online, you would be lucky to get it for $50-$60. I picked it up for a mere $8. I was ecstatic.

For those of you unfamiliar with Digimon as a whole, it started in the form of a keychain digital pet, like Tamagotchi (In fact, they were Bandai’s spin-off of Tamagotchi). The franchise got wildly popular in Japan and mildly popular in America. Most of the games produced at the time, like many Bandai products, maintain a great collector’s value. Digimon World 2 is one of the more valuable games for the PS1. So, what is the game all about?

Digimon World 2 took a different route from it’s predecessor, which had the player raise a single Digimon much the same way as he or she would on the keychain. The game did take place in a 3D world and had a storyline, but was more focused on the raising of your digital pet. In the second game, the player is a young boy who is just stepping into the role of a Guard. You choose one of three factions to join, which determines your starting partner. From here, the game becomes a dungeon crawling, turn based RPG. You can recruit other Digimon and have teams of three at a time to help you in the dungeons.

At first, your new recruits can only reach a low max level (e.g. 16). You must use DNA digivolution to raise that level cap. You are also rewarded Digivolution Points, which can affect what your Digimon will digivolve into. The digivolution process is the most difficult, and some times frustrating part of the game, but if done correctly, is quite rewarding. It is possible to go all the way to Mega form for some digimon (The fourth and final form).

Another challenge in the game is the dungeon crawl itself. The protagonist, Akira, is charged with entering Domains (the dungeons) and defeating evil Digimon. To do this, you must (obviously) reach the end of the dungeon. This is not as easy as it sounds, because your Digi-Beetle, the tank you drive around the Domains in, only has a certain amount of energy that gets depleted with every step you take. This adds limitations to exploration early on and until you upgrade your engine, could result in playing a Domain over again. These frustrations add to the addictiveness of the game. It adds challenge that many of today’s games simply lack.

If you happen across this game for a decent price, I would recommend picking it up and giving Digimon a chance. Even if you decide you do not like the game, you could make a decent profit off of this rare work.

Elemental Gearbolt Assassin Case Price History

Up until yesterday we were missing a rare game from the Playstation (PS1) price list - Elemental Gearbolt Assassin's Case.

When Working Designs published Elemental Gearbolt for PS1 they also made 50 Assassin's cases which were given out at 1998's E3 expo. Some were given away to journalists and others were given away to attendees in two separate contests.

The Assassin's Case includes the Elemental Gearbolts game, a Silver briefcase with locks, a gold plated GunCon, a PS1 memory card, and a congratulatory letter from Working Designs.

The most recent verified sale was for $3,000 on eBay which makes this far and away the most expensive game for the Playstation 1.

NBA 2 Ball | Rare Game for Playstation 1

NBA 2 Ball Cover PS1
As I mentioned in an earlier post, a reader on VGPC found a NBA 2 Ball demo disc for the original Playstation 1. This is only the fourth disc known to exist!

The game was given out at the 1998 NBA All Star game as part of the festivities. Some sites have claimed that 500 to 1,000 copies were given out but so far only four are known to exist. Two of which have black sleeves and two of which have white sleeves.

The reader who has this game (and is selling it on ebay right now) bought it from a friend for $5. The friend's father received the PS1 demo disc by winning the slam dunk contest at the NBA All-star game fan festivities.

This version is a white sleeve and the only other white sleeve is owned by one of the programmers of the game. The other two black sleeve copies are owned by the same game collector, Jason Dvorak.

How many are NBA 2 Ball Discs Are There?

The big question for any collector interested in this item is "how many are there really?" If thousands of copies were given out at the game there would probably be more than four verified to still exist. So maybe only a few of the games were given out to people and the item is really rare.

Or there are hundreds of these discs in people's PS1 game collections just waiting to hit the market and the price will plummet.

I'm sure a few more copies will surface after this auction closes (like they always do), but how many? If you think only a few exist than the $320 current bid is probably a bargain. But if thousands exist the game is probably only worth $15-20.

Expensive PS1 GamesNew Price: $450 | Used Price: $110 | See Current Prices
Suikoden II was published in 1999 by Konami. It is a strategy role playing game with small scale battles with up to 6 people and large scale battles between armies. The game allowed you to import your characters from the original Suikoden.

The game was printed in small quantities in the initial run and didn't sell well enough to warrant an additional printing. The game's depth and loyal fanbase keep this game very expensive.

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne

Valuable PS1 GamesNew Price: $315 | Used Price: $91 | See Current Prices
Misadventures of Tron Bonne is a prequel to Mega Man Legends centered around the the anti-hero Tron Bonne. The game is very different from other Mega Man games with some puzzle levels, some adventure levels, and other action type levels.

Tron Bonne was released in 2000, the same year the Playstation 2 was released. The publisher said sales were "relatively light" in the USA. The game included a playable demo of Mega Man Legends 2, which appears later in this list.

Marvel vs. Capcom Clash of Super Heroes

New Price: $299 | Used Price: $37 | See Current Prices
Marvel vs Capcom Clash of the Super Heroes is a 2D fighter with Marvel and Capcom characters. It is the first game in the Marvel vs Capcom series and the first Capcom fighter wth Marvel charactes and non-Street Fighter characters like Megaman and Strider.

The entire Marvel vs Capcom series is renowned as one of the finest fighting series of all time. The excellent gameplay keeps demand strong. A sequel was released on the Dreamcast within a year, but was never released on the Playstation, which generally indicates sales were below the publisher's expectations with the first game.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

New Price: $250 | Used Price: $38 | See Current Prices
Klonoa: Door to PHantomile is the first Klonoa game in this series of platformers. The game is a side scroller but the graphics are rendered in 3D.

Klonoa received great reviews when it was released and is considered one of the best platformers for the Playstation. The game sold relatively well in the USA and internationally but the enduring gameplay and level design keep demand high as well.

Diablo

New Price: $250 | Used Price: $26 | See Current Prices
Diablo is a horror themed action role-playing game. Unlike the PC version which featured four player co-op and online play, the PS1 version allowed only two player co-op and no online mode.

Diablo sold well on the PS1, but not nearly as much as the PC version. Diablo was rated game of the year in 1996 and has the highest overall rating of all PC games on Gamespot. Demand is very strong for this game which keeps its price high.

Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter

New Price: $230 | Used Price: $30 | See Current Prices
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter is another 2D fighter colaboration from Capcom and Marvel but only featuring Street Fighter characters. It is a sequel to X-men vs Street Fighter, which was the first Capcom fighter published with Marvel characters.

Like other Capcom and Marvel fighters it sold well initially and continues to be popular with gamers and collectors. This continued demand for the game makes the game expensive because the game has never been reprinted.

Valkyrie Profile

Rare Playstation 1New Price: $230 | Used Price: $63 | See Current Prices
Valkyrie Profile is a traditional turn based RPG developed by Enix. It is loosely based upon Norse mythology with references to Valhalla, Ragnorok and other Norse Gods.

The game was a commerical success worldwide but sold only 73,000 copies in the USA. The game received widespread critical acclaim and is still loved by many RPG fans. This is one of the most expensive games on the list when in used condition.

Tales of Destiny

Expensive Playstation GamesNew Price: $225 | Used Price: $68 | See Current Prices
Tales of Destiny is the second game in the Tales series after Tales of Phantasia. It is a role playing game with a unique battle system referred to as Linear Motion Battle Systems. The battles are in 2D, but all combatants attack in real-time and the game rewards multi-hit combos so timing your attacks and magic correctly is rewarded.

The game sold more than a million copies in Japan, but like most Japanese RPG's it did not sell as well in the USA. It still sold close to six figures though. Even with higher unit sales than most games on the list, it fetchs a very high price because it remains so popular. Even a re-release on Playstation 2 in 2006 hasn't dented demand.

Tactics Ogre

Rare PS1 GamesNew Price: $215 | Used Price: $55 | See Current Prices
Tactics Ogre is the second game in the Ogre Battle series, but with so many changes that it is considered by some to be its own series. The original Ogre Battle was focused on grand strategy role playing with armies, but Tactics Ogre is focused on the individual people in the army and battles take place on a grid like most strategy RPGs.

Like its predecessor, Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, which is one of the rarest Super Nintendo games. Tactics Ogre is hard to find as well with a limited production run. Prices have come down from their highs several years ago when it was selling for almost $100 used.

X-Com UFO Defense

New Price: $200 | Used Price: $46 | See Current Prices
X-Com is a strategy and role-playing game with elements of Civilization, defeating alien races and technology trees, but also includes RPG elements too. X-Com is considered one of the greatest games ever made. The PC version is consistantly rated in the top 10 PC games of all time by multiple publications including IGN and PC Gamer.

The Playstation 1 version did not sell as well as the PC game, but very strong demand for the game is what keeps prices so high. Many gamers are willing to pay top dollar for a chance to play one of the best games strategy games ever made.

Herc's Adventures

New Price: $200 | Used Price: $43 | See Current Prices
Herc's Adventure is a top-down Action Adventure game featuring charactes from Greek mythology. You can play as Hercules, Jason, or Atlanta and get to fight Cyclops, Medusa, and Hydra. The game is very similar to Zombies At My Neighbors for Genesis and SNES, with similar gameplay and humor.

Even though the game is very solid all around, the game sold poorly on both PS1 and Saturn. It is quite hard to find in the wild.

Revelations: Persona

New Price: $190 | Used Price: $40 | See Current Prices
Revelations: Persona is a role-playing game and spin-off from the Shin Megami Tensei series developed by Atlus. You play as teenagers who must fight off demons in turn-based battles. It has spawned its own series of games after its success.

Persona received a limited print-run like most Atlus game, but unlike Persona 2, the original has never been re-released. Prices for the Playstation version have dropped since a remake for PSP was released in April 2009.

ISS Pro Evolution

New Price: $182 | Used Price: $51 | See Current Prices
ISS Pro Evolution is a soccer game released exclusively on the Playstation 1. The game includes a large selection of international and club teams but did not officially license any of the leagues. It used uniforms and logos that looked similar to the teams they represent and even player names that were spelled differently that actual footballers.

The game received outstanding reviews when it was released, but it came out six months before the Playstation 2 as interest in Playstation 1 games was waning. It was the last ISS game released for the PS1.

Tomba

Valuable Playstation 1New Price: $175 | Used Price: $58 | See Current Prices
Tomba is a side-scrolling adventure game from the producer of Mega Man and Ghosts N Goblins. You complete various tasks to earn Adventure Points, which are used to unlock additional missions.

The game received great reviews when it was released and sold well enough to warrant a sequel but the developer Whoppee Camp closed immediately following the sequel. The game sells for almost $60 used and $175 in used condition.

DiscWorld

New Price: $170 | Used Price: $23 | See Current Prices
DiscWorld is a video game based on the DiscWorld series of fantasy books by Sir Terry Pratchett. The game is a point-and-click adventure game with the usual item finding, puzzle solving, and conversations that are a hallmark of the genre.

The game sold poorly but the devoted fans of the series have kept the game very valuable for collectors. In used condition the game isn't very expensive, but in new conditoin it fetches top dollar.

Mega Man Legends 2

Expensive Playstation 1New Price: $162 | Used Price: $59 | See Current Prices
Mega Man Legends 2 is the game included on the demo disc for Tron Bonne (see above) and is part of the same series. The gameplay is similar to a Zelda game with some RPG type elements but mostly action oriented.

The 2nd game in the series improved upon the first in most ways and received positive reviews, but sold very badly. The game only sold 88,000 units in Japan and sold much better in Japan than any other region.

Brigandine The Legend of Forsena

Valuable Playstation GamesNew Price: $150 | Used Price: $66 | See Current Prices
Brigandine is a tactical RPG released by Atlus. You control a nation and must conquer all other nations on the continent of Forsena. Like many tactical RPG's and strategy games, Brigandine is broken down into a preparation mode, with tactical decisions like moving troops between castles, and a battle mode, with actual combat taking place on a grid board.

Like almost every Atlus game ever made, Brigandine received a limited print run but it never sold well enough to warrant a re-release. The game is one of the most expensive titles on this list when in used condition.

Team Buddies

Rare PS1New Price: $150 | Used Price: $64 | See Current Prices
Team Buddies is a unique game that combines elements of Worms, Rayman, and Conker's Bad Fur Day. The game is a real-time strategy game with bright colors and multi-player modes. The European version of the game had different racial identities for each character class with the ability to taunt the other players with stereotypical sayings for each race, for example Scots could say "effing bastard". Unfortunately these were removed from the NTSC release.

Team Buddies came out one month before the Playstation 2 was released and was overlooked by many gamers and sold poorly as a result.

Lunar Silver Star Story

New Price: $150 | Used Price: $44 | See Current Prices
Lunar Silver Star Story is a role playing game published by Working Designs. It is a remake of Lunar: Silver Star for Sega CD with improved graphics and the elimination of random battles. The sequel Lunar: Eternal Blue was also remade for the Playstation 1.

The game sold more than 220,000 copies but Working Designs only published the game for seven months and stopped production on Decemeber 31st 1999. Even though the game sold more copies than many other PS1 games, it continues to sell for a premium price due to its continued popularity and Working Designs ceasing production before demand was met.

Persona 2 Reprint $40, Christmas Comes Early

Atlus is giving an early Christmas present to all the good little video game collector's out there. They are reprinting Persona 2 for Playstation 1. Available only on Amazon.com for $39.99. The game sells for $170 sealed on the resale market so $40 is a steal.

This reprinting is not going to last long. It will be interesting to track the prices and see how they change with this new inventory. The change in the price will definitely depend on how many units Atlus is going to sell through Amazon.

Gamers get this game on the cheap while you can. Below is the price chart showing Persona 2's price the last year. As you can see it has only been going up.

Thank you Chris for this tip.

UPDATE: Amazon already sold out. This was too good of a deal for people to pass up. Congratulations to those you got them.

The Rise and Fall of Spyro

What happened to Spyro games for Playstation between October 2007 and January 2008? The resale prices for every PS1 Spyro game increased by at least 100% during this time. At first I thought it was Christmas, but Christmas 2006 (the far left side of each chart) shows almost no price change at all from December 2006 to January 2007. So it isn't just a seasonal increase in demand for Spyro games. Spyro Enternal Night was released in October 2007. Is that the sole reason for a price spike of more than 200% in some cases? If you have any other ideas for what caused this huge price increase last year let us know by leaving a comment.
